fake SSL Certificates detected with Comodo Verification Engine – free of charge
Comodo delivers Verification Engine for "out of browser" confidence
Manchester UK, 25 July 2003 — Comodo, the internet security specialists, have today announced details of their Verification Engine product which eliminates the possibility of spoof web sites and faked SSL Certificates. In keeping with Comodo's philosophy of empowering security for consumers Verification Engine is available free of charge.
The recent PayPal scam, in which an SSL Certificate was used to engender trust in visitors to the website, demonstrates clearly that consumers need to have methods of authenticating websites which extend beyond the browser. The Comodo Verification Engine gives consumers the ability to verify the authenticity and identity of InstantSSL Certificates displayed on web sites. Uniquely, the confirmation takes place externally to the user's browser by utilizing a Trusted Third Party. The benefit of this is that the website has no means of interfering or affecting the verification process. This dovetails with the full two-factor validation process that is an integral element of the issuance of all InstantSSL Certificates, so that consumers can then be assured that the certificate has not been copied from another site or falsely created.
Developed over several years and covered by numerous patents, Verification Engine employs real time web identity assurance and "mouse-over" functionality to deliver consumer confidence. By simply moving their mouse over the padlock icon which appears in the status bar of the browser, signifying the presence of an encrypted link via SSL Certificate, the consumer immediately sees details of the validity of that Certificate. This is reinforced by the appearance of an eye-catching green border, which is outside of the browser, to demonstrate that the displayed credentials have not been faked; proving once and for all that What You See Is What You Get.
Comodo is the only certification authority to issue low cost fully-validated SSL Certificate with warranties and has developed a portfolio of products to leverage the power of digital identities, both for personal and commercial authentication.
